Arsenal is going to visit Craven Cottage to take on home side Fulham in a premier league fixture next Saturday. Though Arsenal comes off an excellent 4-0 thrashing of Wigan Athletic, it would not be an easy fixture for the Gunners. Here, it is notable that Wenger boys lost the corresponding fixture 1-0 last season at Cottage, and that is what, Fulham players are relishing to repeat. Overall, there is no doubt, Fulham will give some tough challenge to the Gunners and it would not be easy to win those challenges as Fulham will be playing at their home ground. All these things suggest an exciting all-London match.

Match: Fulham vs Arsenal; English Premier League 2009-10
Date: 26 September 2009
Venue: Craven Cottage, London, England
Kick off: 17:30 BST; 16:30 GMT

Arsenal youngsters clinched a 2-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion in the third round of League Cup after an impressive victory over Wigan Athletic last weekend. Arsenal is currently in the seventh place of league standing with 9 points from 5 games. Though the Gunners had an excellent start to the season, they suffered to back-to-back defeats at Manchester United and Manchester City. The two defeats moved the North London club out of the top four.

There are many who are pretty much disappointed with Arsenal’s performance and strongly criticizing Wenger’s approach to stick-to-the-youth policy. Many are calling for spending big amount in the transfer window to bring in some star players at the Emirates camp, but what most of them do not understand is that Arsenal is under huge pressure and they do not have enough money in their purse to spend big in the transfer market. What I believe is that Arsenal is going through a formation period and a golden period for Arsenal is just around the corner.

So, Arsenal has got to cope up with a tight budget and they have to get the best out of their limited resources. They have a very young team with just few aged players like William Gallas and I do think that when the average age of the squad will be around 25, Arsenal will start showing what they are capable of. So, my suggestion for those who are desperate to see Arsenal winning silverware is that you have to give some more time to Wenger and hold your patience.

Fulham did not have a very good start to the current premier league season, even though Roy Hodgson boys clinched a UEFA Europa spot last season. No doubt, the London outfits are looking to replicate that success this season too. However, Fulham has not got a very strong start, even though the season is still in its infancy. Out of 5 games, Fulham won 2 and lost 3 so far this season in the league. Fulham stands at the 14th place at this moment with 6 points, just 2 points above the relegation zone.

Fulham may be missing defender Paul Konchesky through his knee injury and Toni Kallio as he is suffering from Achilles problems, but they still have a very good squad that can take a stern test of the visiting Gunners. In fact, winning a point from the game is very much in their mind. In the midfield, they have a very talented winger like Damien Duff who can create chances for the strikers, though Bobby Zamora and Andrew Johnson don’t seem threatening. Fulham midfield also has two quality players like Danny Murphy and Danny Murphy, while their back line boasts of Brede Hangeland, who scored the winner for Wigan against Arsenal last season. Between the posts, they have someone reliable like Australian international Mark Schwarzer.

Arsenal has a threatening squad that can defeat any side in its day, but the Gunners are missing a number of quality players through injury. Denilson is suffering from back injury sustained during 4-2 loss at City, while Andriy Arshavin is out of action with a groin injury, but there is a very slight possibility he could make it to the Arsenal trip to Fulham.

Sportbox reported:

Arsenal continue to struggle with injury problems as Denilson (back), Andriy Arshavin (groin), Theo Walcott (back), Johann Djourou (knee) and Samir Nasri (broken leg) all missing.
It is expected that Manuel Almunia will return to replace stand-in goalkeeper Vito Mannone following a virus.

However, some other sources claim that regular keeper Alumnia will be out for the Fulham clash too as he is still recovering from chest infection.

Manuel Almunia is still not a certain starter. The goalkeeper is still struggling with a chest infection and could not feature. If the Spainard is unable to play Vito Mannone will be elevated off the bench and Wojciech Szczęsny will become the second choice keeper.

Arsenal defense, however, does not need to worry about injury. All the front line defenders are available for Wenger to choose from. In the middle, William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen will continue their excellent job, while two flanks will be occupied by Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna. In the midfield, Wenger has a quality playmaker in Cesc Fabregas, while Song can play as a holding midfielder. Diaby and Eboue might occupy the two wings and Tomas Rosicky, who returned to action very recently following a long injury, could be a very good option in the midfield. In the up front, Robin van Persie is the ultimate choice. If Wenger wants to deploy two forwards, then you could see Eduardo or Bendtner playing alongside van Persie.

Reports out in the media suggests that Wenger is still interested in Fulham defender Brede Hangeland who was linked with a move to Arsenal during Summer transfer window. Now, the player’s agent has claimed that Arsenal still has interest in his client. Though Wenger has signed Thomas Vermaelen, who has already made his presence felt at the club, it is pretty much sure that Arsenal still has problem in the defense as it was evident in their 4-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester City. So, it indicates that Wenger might still want to sign the Fulham defender.

Dailymail reported:

But, despite Vermaelen's impressive start to his career at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal's defensive problems are not yet totally solved, as displayed when Wenger's men conceded four goals in a defeat to Manchester City earlier this month.
This could lead to a fresh move for Hangeland in January. His agent, Rune Hauge, said of the failed summer swoop: 'There was interest - but nothing concrete.'

So, it is pretty much natural that the defender would like to show another strong performance in front of Arsene Wenger in order to lure the Arsenal boss to make another bid for him.

Arsenal is favorite, but it would be a big mistake of Wenger boys, if they take the home side lightly and feel any kind of complacency brought to them by last Saturday’s 4-0 win over Wigan. Arsenal must know that they lost to Fulham last season and that was the start of a poor run for the club. So, this time, they must be a bit more conscious about a possible Fulham threat. Otherwise, Wenger and his team might have to face another humiliating defeat at the hands of Fulham. Hodgson boys, on the other hand, will be looking for at least a point from the game, if not three. If both sides can play according to their merit, then you can expect an enjoyable affair on Saturday.
