England defeated Slovenia 2-1 in a friendly match on Saturday at the Wembley Stadium. It was a practice match for the Three Lions who are going to face Croatia at home in a very important world cup qualifying game where a win would ensure their place in next year’s world cup.
However, England’s performance was not satisfactory. The home side opened scoring thanks to a penalty goal from Frank Lampard in the 30th minute before substitute Jermain Defoe doubled the lead in the 63rd minute. England missed a number of scoring chances throughout the game. In fact, Rooney alone missed three easy chances, even though he earned the penalty for England.
English defense was horrible in the match. In fact, Joleon Lescott, who moved from Everton to Manchester City for £22 million transfer deal, made a mistake, and thus, Slovenia scored a consolation goal through Zlatan Ljubijankic just five minutes off the final time.
English goalkeeper Robert Green was also poor in the game. Naturally, England coach Fabio Capello is not happy with England’s performance in the friendly. Now, let us see if England can work out the problem before hosting Croatia on 9 September 2009.
