Renault Nissan Chennai plant will roll out redesigned Nissan Micra hatchback in July

On March 18, 2010, Renault-Nissan inaugurated its Indian plant, Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd., in Chennai. The plant cost $990 million and it will become operational in May. The plant will roll out redesigned Nissan Micra hatchback that was previously assembled in Japan and the U.K. The car will hit the Indian market in July. Nissan-Renault is looking forward to sell 80,000 units in India in the current fiscal year ending in March 2011. The alliance will also export the car. By 2013, Nissan-Renault wants to sell one million units worldwide.


At full capacity, the plant can produce 400,000 vehicles per year. Initially, 1,500 employees will be working in the plant. The company will also work with six local suppliers eventually creating 4,500 jobs.


The Micra would be built on V-platform and would be exported to more than one hundred countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Last week, the Micra was launched in Thailand. Renault-Nissan also has its plant in suburban Bangkok which would build 90,000 Micra hatchbacks in the 2010/11 fiscal year starting from April 1, 2010, and would export 70,000 units. The Thai plant also produces other models of Renault-Nissan and export to Australia and New Zealand. The alliance will also roll out Micra in China and Mexico.
