Canara Bank is one of the largest nationalized commercial banks in India with a total business of Rs. 2 trillion. It was established by late Sri. Ammembal Subba Rao Pai as the Canara Bank Hindu Permanent Fund in Mangalore on July 1, 1906. In 1910, the bank changed its name to Canara Bank Limited when it incorporated. In 1958, the Reserve Bank of India ordered Canara Bank to acquire G. Raghumathmul Bank, in Hyderabad which was established in 1870 and had converted to a limited company in 1925. At the time of the acquisition, G. Raghumathmul Bank had five branches. The government of India nationalized Canara Bank along with thirteen other major commerical banks of India on July 19, 1969. The bank inaugurated its 1000th branch in 1976. The bank opened its first overseas office in London in 1983. In 1985, Canara Bank acquired Lakshmi Commercial bank.
