Famous Marathi writer Vinda karandikar died at 92

Famous Marathi writer, Govind Vināyak Karandikar, died on March 14, 2010 at the age of ninety two. Popularly known as Vinda Karandikar, he won Jnanpith Award, one of the most prestigious literature awards in India. During his lifetime, the poet won numerous awards for his works including Keshavasut Prize, Soviet Land Nehru Literary Award, and Kabir Samman. For his works, in 1996, he received the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship, India’s highest literary award for lifetime achievement.


Vinda Karandikar died at the Guru Nanak Hospital in Bandra East. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. His wife died last year. His son, Uday Karandikar

told reporters that his body will be donated to Sir J.J. Hospital as per his will. Karandikar’s body will be kept at his residence at Sahita Sahwas in Bandra East so that people can pay their last respects. Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan described Karandikar as “the brightest star in the literary world.” He said,

“He was a genius who earned a large fan-following with his vast and diverse writings and poems. He had the remarkable ability to establish a rapport with the young and old generations alike,”

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, said that “with his demise, it is the end of an era in Marathi literary field”.
