Leena Manimekalai is facing charges for writing obscene poems

Noted Tamil film maker, Leena Manimekalai, is now facing charges for her poems. Hindu Makkal Katchi aka Hindu Peoples Party filed a case against her blog 'Ulagin Azhagiya Muthul Penn.' They alleged that some of Leena's poems portrayed women in an “unacceptable manner.” T Kannan, secretary of HMK, filed the complaint. Mr. Kannan checked her poems and felt that she portrayed women in an “obscene manner.” He then read her blog, 'Ulagin Azhagiya Muthul Penn,' and found similar content. He asked police to take action against her.


Leena Manimekalai graduated from engineering college but she went on to become an independent movie maker. Her movies deal with social issues such as caste, gender discrimination, and child labor. She received many awards for her movies. She also produced TV shows and anchored in Sun Television, Vijay Television, Doordarshan, Minbimbangal productions and Deepam television. Currently, she runs a media organization jointly with C.Jerrold. Her major movies include Mathamma, Altar, Waves after Waves, and Parai.
