Director James Cameron’s Avatar released in theatres and the sci-fi 3D action movie, based on the struggle between invading humans and humanoids called Navi, enjoyed solid openings in theatres around the world. It is the computer 3D effects that make Avatar great fun to movie but there is no hidden message. It shows civilized white men invading a moon and displacing its inhabitants; an age old story of struggle and survival of the fittest.
The movie was released in Europe on December 10th and December 17th followed by December 18th in the U.S. The movie took the number one spot in box office collecting $73 million in ticket sales on Sunday. Overall, the movie collected $77 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada.
The story of the movie is set in a distant future in 2154 in Pandora, a low gravity moon of Polyphemus, a “gas giant orbiting Alpha Centauri A.” A human corporation is conducting a mining work on the moon to procure unobtanium, a precious mineral. The corporation hires ex-soldiers and mercenaries to fight the inhabitants of the moon, sapient humanoids who goes by the name Na’vi. Avatar is written and directed by James Cameron, who directed sci-fi blockbusters like Aliens and Terminator. The movie stars Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang. The film was produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox.
