Today, Ford Motor Co., one of the big three automakers of the U.S., launched its compact car for India. The model, named Ford Figo, had been globally launched in India and it would compete with premiere compact car models such as Chevrolet's Spark, Hyundai's i10, Volkswagen AG's Polo, GM's Beat, Maruti Suzuki Swift and Ritz from Maruti. In 2010 and 2011, other major companies like Nissan, Renault S.A., Toyota, and Honda would come up with their own compact cars.
At the launching ceremony, Michael Boneham, President, Ford Motors, India said that 70% of the cars sold in India are small cars. Hence, Ford came up with Figo. He said that this is the right product at the right price point for Ford and they are not in the business to lose money. Mr. Boneham also said that Ford would launch new cars after every twelve to eighteen months but did not give out details of the future launches. The 1.2 liter gasoline and 1.4 liter diesel engine version of Ford Figo would be produced in Ford’s Indian plant, located in Chennai. Ford is planning to source 85% of Figo’s auto-parts from Indian suppliers to keep the production cost low.
