Asia is becoming an important region for Samsung. As Europe and American users are becoming more interested to use smartphones, Samsung is selling more smartphones in countries like India. Now, the company is trying hard to lure more consumers to buy its feature phones.

Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, Samsung Group is a multinational conglomerate operation and one of the largest conglomerate with an annual turnover of $173.4 billion (2008). The company has numerous national and international business affiliates most of which united under Samsung Brand. Samsung Electronics is one of the top consumer electronics producers in the world. The company produces a wide range of products including mobile phones, TV, and wide range household appliances. The Samsung Heavy Industries is also the second largest shipbuilding company in the world. Samsung C&T is also a one top construction companies in the world.

Since 2005, Samsung Electronics became one of the most popular consumer electronics brand and the best known brand of South Korea in the world. Samsung Group accounts for more than 20% of South Korea’s total exports. It is also the domestic leader in financial, chemical, retail and entertainment industry. Due to the company’s strong influence in South Korea it is often referred as the “Republic of Samsung.”

Samsung was established by Lee Byung-Chull in 1938. In the beginning, it was a small trading company located in Daegu, the third largest metropolitan area in South Korea. Till the Communist invasion in South Korea in 1950, the company prospered. Due to the invasion, Lee left Seoul and started his business in Busan. During the Korean war, Samsung’s business prospered and assets grew twenty-fold. In 1953, Lee started a sugar-refinery which was also the first manufacturing company of South Korea after the Korean War. The company then diversified its business in many areas and eventually Lee turned Samsung into an industry leader in many domestic sector including insurance, securities, and retail. In the early 1970s, Lee started a radio and television station. For the project, he borrowed heavily from foreign interests.

In the 1960s and 70s, Samsung observed unprecedented growth, thanks to South Korean President, Park Chung-Hee’s vision. He emphasized heavily on industrialization and economic development strategy led by a handful of domestic conglomerates. Hee’s regime protected these companies from competitors and financially assisted them. Hee’s regime banned several foreign companies from selling consumer electronics in South Korea and created the opportunity for companies like Samsung to nurture and grow. Samsung became the first South Korean company to produce random access memory chips.

Samsung Group later created several electronics divisions including Samsung Electronics Devices Co., Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Samsung Corning Co., and Samsung Semiconductor & Telecommunications Co. It consolidated these companies under Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in 1980s. Samsung’s first product was a black-and-white television set.

Samsung is also a major sponsor of various sports events. In order to improve its internationla image, the company spent more than $6billion on marketing since 1998. It was also among the major sponsors of the last five Olympics. The company also built a large video sign in Times Square in 2002.

3G auction in India on 14 January 2010?

India has the second largest user base in mobile phone. So, many local and foreign companies are interested about 3g Technology. You know that with 3G technology, telecom companies can offer super fast Internet, voice and video facility to the subscribers. Now, it seems that the auction would take place on 14 January 2010.
PC world reported:
The communications ministry did not issue a notice inviting applications for the bid, as scheduled on Dec. 8, which led to speculation that the auction may be postponed again. The final date for applications was Dec. 21, according to a tentative schedule released by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) in October.
The auction was originally fixed for January 2009, but was delayed as the country's finance and communications ministries could not agree on a minimum price for the licenses.

Indian government should be more proactive about allowing new technology to come in India. The government wants Indian economy to grow rapidly and for this there is no alternate to new technology. This 3G license and spectrums would bring billions of dollars to the government.

Pakistan: Female literacy through Mobile Phones

Well, when I see this kind of report, I sometimes get confused. On the one hand, I feel that it is waste of money. After all, school is the best place for increasing literacy. On the other hand, this project is targeted for women who did not go to school. Anyway, the reality is that female literacy rate in Pakistan is extremely low. So, any effort is a good one.

The five-month programme, initiated by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), targeted 250 females aged 15 to 24 years old in three districts.
Pakistan, with half its population illiterate, is the fourth largest contributor to the world illiterate population. The literacy rate for males is 63 per cent, compared to only 36 per cent for females, making the country with one of the widest gap in this region.

Pakistan: Mobile Phone is Making Radio Popular

In South Asia, most people have this idea that radio is for poor people and television for well off people and mobile phone is not for poor people. Well, it seems to me that radio stations are making a comeback in Pakistan not with radio sets but with mobile phone handsets. In Pakistan, cricket is very popular and that is why, many people prefer to have handsets with FM radio facility. As a result, when there is a cricket match involving Pakistani national team, many people love to listen to the commentary by their mobile phone sets.

Pakistan is poised to have 100 million subscribers in the next few months.

Sri Lanka: No Mobile Phone in School

In most countries in the world, mobile phone operators feel that it is the young generation who is their main customer. They have this feeling because young people try to adapt to new technology more than their elders. Sri Lanka is not an exception either. It has mobile phone penetration rate of over 50% and this is a good market for any company. So, the operators have brought this technology to the hand of teenagers and this has caused some problems in some schools. Many teenagers are getting addicted to their phone sets and what happened was that a teacher scolded a girl severely for talking to a boy with her cell during school time. This matter made the girl very sad and she committed suicide. Another student tried to kill himself. So, the government officials have become worried and have banned carrying cell phones in school.

Well, I do not support this decision because for working parents whose children go to school every day, mobile phone is a very important device to stay connected. So, what Sri Lankan government is doing in fact is like cutting off the head because headache pain.

Smart Telecom: A New Mobile Phone Operator in Nepal

Nepal may not be a country that all the time catches the attention of international media for economic issues but it has some kind of peace and stability at this moment. So, it is also a very good time for economic activities and there is going to be a new mobile phone operator in the country called Smart Telecom. I tried to find the website of this mobile phone operator but could not do it. So, if you know the website address of Smart Telecom then let me know when the comment section.

The company has just got the license to provide mobile phone service in the country and they’re going to start the service is very soon.

My Republica reported:

Smart Telecom, which acquired the license to provide telecom services after depositing a fee of US$39,500, is a joint venture between Nepali, Singaporean and Israeli companies. Lal Sahu Distributions Limited of Singapore has 70 percent stake in the company, while Square Network Nepal and Gilat Satellite Networks of Israel have 20 percent and 10 percent shares, respectively.

As per the commitment expressed by the company during the time of acquiring the license, it will have to first introduce services in 398 VDCs in remote areas of western, mid-western, far-western and central regions.

There is a still a lot of room for growth in the mobile phone sector of the country as tele-density is not that high. Most people are poor and live in the rural areas and there is a very big market to catch.

Pakistan Mobile Phone Operators Competing with Value Added Services

For how many years, have you been using a mobile phone? I have been using for quite sometime. I remember that a decade ago, I had no idea about SMS or MMS. I was thinking of the mobile phone sector of Pakistan today. Now, mobile pone penetration is very high in the country and the mobile phone operators cannot see a lot of room for growth. So, they have to try to increase Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) by providing more and more value added services (VAS).

Right now, the mobile phone operators in Pakistan provide a number of Value added services. You can browse Internet, get latest news updates, horoscope etc. Well, I feel that mobile commerce (m-commerce) should be given more priority in the country. Of course, for it, the operators need a lot of support from the government. What I understand is that in America, you can do a lot of things with your mobile phone. The same thing needs to be done in Pakistan too.
