ICC Champions Trophy 2009: First Semifinal Tomorrow

It is semifinal time for Champions Trophy. The first semifinal will take place tomorrow 2 October 2009. It is an Australia vs England match and that means plenty of excitement in both the countries. It is the oldest rivalry in any sports. It is popularly called Ashes series but tomorrow’s match is even bigger than any Ashes match. The winner will go in the final of ICC Champions Trophy 2009. So, losing is not an option for any of them.
Judging by the current form, I have to say that it is Australia who is the strong favorite. Recently, they demolished England in England in the ODI series. In fact, this ODI series finished just 2 days before the start of Champions Trophy 2009. So, Australian players should be in a very confident mood tonight. They should have good sleep. On the other hand, English players are not in good mood after they lost very bad way to New Zealand just the other day.
Well, whoever wins tomorrow, surely the biggest loser will be Star Cricket because there is no India in the semifinals. So, most viewers in India will not bother about tomorrow’s match. It is bad news for the companies that have given ads to the channel. Star Cricket is suffering for the second time in four months. The same problem happened when India had an early exit from T20 World Cup 2009.

Looking for a semi final berth in Champions Trophy 2009, Australia is going to play their last group match against Pakistan tomorrow (30 September) at Centurion. After the match between India and Australia was washed out yesterday, Australia now needs to win over Pakistan in order to clinch their semi final place without having to face any complex calculation of net run rate. For Pakistan, it is not a very big match because they have already reached the semi final after winning over West Indies and India. However, Pakistan knows it very well that if they lose to Australia then Australia will go into the last four as Group A champion. Naturally, Pakistan would like to hold on to its leading place in the group.

Match: Australia vs Pakistan, Group A, ICC Champions Trophy 2009

Date: 30 September 2009

Venue: The SuperSport Park, Centurion, South Africa

Kick off: 07:30 GMT (Local Time 09:30)

Australia is now in the race with India to reach the semi final. Ponting and his side defeated West Indies by 50 runs in the first group match and then shared points with India in the washed-out game. So, they have 3 points from 2 games, while India, who lost to Pakistan in the first game, has only 1 point from 2 matches. The good thing for India is that they would face West Indies in their next match, and thus, having a good chance of maintaining a good net run rate by defeating the second string West Indies with a big margin.

BBC reported:

India now have to beat West Indies on Wednesday if they hope to progress.

With Pakistan already into the last four with two wins from two games, India have one point and Australia three.

That means Mahendra Dhoni's men must beat the Windies convincingly and hope Pakistan see off Australia in Wednesday's other match.

At this moment, Australia has an advantage over India in terms of net run rate. Australia’s net run rate is +1.000, almost +2.08 above India. That means Australia can go through to the semi final, even if they lose against Pakistan. They just need to ensure that they do not suffer a big margin victory. The smaller the Pakistan’s winning margin over Australia would be, the bigger the India’s winning margin over West Indies would be required.

Australia got off to a winning start in the tournament when they defeated West Indies by 50 runs in the opening game. Against India, Australian batsmen were looking formidable until rain halted the game. Australian batsmen failed to appear with their best against West Indies, but their top order batsmen got their form back against India. Captain Ricky Ponting was impressive in both the games, scoring half centuries on both occasions. Naturally, Australia has nothing to worry about at this moment. They just need to according to their credit.

PTI News reported:

The Australians have had a reasonably good tournament, wining the opening match against the West Indies before dominating the abandoned game against India.

Ponting has led from the front in both the matches, scoring a couple of crucial fifties and putting together match-saving partnerships in tough conditions.

However, Australian batsmen might face a big test against Pakistan’s two in-from spinners: Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal who are currently causing problems for the opposition batsmen consistently. I think, Pakistan would feature Mohammad Asif who has been back into the squad after serving a year of doping ban. The pacer has not played any international game over more than a year now. Naturally, Pakistan would like to play the pacer because they have already ensured their semi final berth and a defeat to Australia would not mar their aspiration of winning the Champions trophy 2009.

Brisbanetimes reported:

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam nominated the presence of spinners Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal as a worry for Australia's batsmen on the slower wicket at SuperSport Park.

"So far the way they are bowling, they are exceptional, so we have an edge over them (Australia)," Intikhab said.

"They are a world-class side, they're very professional cricketers, but it will be a great challenge for them to tackle the Pakistani spinners."

Pakistani batsmen got their form back against India, even though they struggled against West Indies while chasing a very low total in their opening game. They have a very good batting line up in the presence of Nazir, Kamran Akmal, Yousuf, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Afridi and Rana Naved. No doubt, Pakistan poses a threat for Australia in the next game.

Australia will also be careful on the net run rate criteria as well. Even if they see that things are going against them, they would then try to ensure that they would not lose by a big margin. So, at this moment, I think Australia seems to be favorite over India to join Pakistan in the semi final. I do not think that Australia would bring any change in their squad against Pakistan.

Pakistan seems to be favorite at this moment, but Australia has a very strong squad and more than anything, Aussies are determined to make it to the semi final. They know that elimination from the group stage would add to their pressure that they have been feeling since losing the Ashes 2009 series. Given Pakistan’s high-flying form, it seems that Younis Khan and his side would like to continue their winning run before playing their semi final match. So, we can expect a highly competitive affair on Wednesday.

India vs Australia Preview & Live Score: ICC Champions Trophy 2009

If you want to get live score of India vs Pakistan match then visit the link- India Australia Match Updates: 28 September 2009
India takes on Australia in a do-or-die affair on 28 September at Centurion. It is a crucial match for both sides, more specially for India who already lost their first game to Pakistan in the tournament. Another defeat would ensure their elimination from the tournament at the group stage and it would add to India’s frustrating performance in World Twenty20 2009. Australia got off to a good start in the tournament beating West Indies by 50 runs and they know a victory over India would clinch their semi final spot with a match in hand. So, it is pretty much understandable that both sides will go into the game with full of confident and they will not be thinking anything except win.

Match: India vs Australia, Group A, ICC Champions Trophy 2009
Date: 28 September 2009
Venue: SuperSport Park, Centurion, South Africa
Kick off: 12:30 GMT (Local Time 14:30)

Well, India will feel the pressure more because this is a must-win game for team India. Following their 54-run defeat at the hands of arch rivals Pakistan, India has no other option of winning the Australia game. Australia, on the other hand, will still have a chance of progressing to the semi final even if they lose to India. So, India has to hold on to their nerve if they are to give their best against Australia.

Australia may have won the opening game by 50 runs, but their performance against depleted West Indies was not impressive at all. In fact, Australia’s top order batsmen except Ponting himself performed poorly and it was bowling all rounder Mitchell Johnson who guided Australia to a competitive total of 275. After that Australian bowlers failed to come up with their threatening appearance against a second string West Indies batting line up. Ricky Ponting has also said that Australia must improve on their performance against India in the next game.

Reuters reported:

"We all know that we need to play better when we take on India in a couple of days' time," Ponting told a news conference, saying he was concerned that his side had conceded 36 extras as they bowled out West Indies for 225.
"Today we had a few too many extras. We expected the new ball to do a bit more for us than it did and the bowlers probably got a little bit carried away with that," he added.

There was concern over Indian pace attack in the absence of experienced Zaheer Khan who is missing the tournament through shoulder injury. All the hopes of Indian bowling attack were around Harbhajan Singh-led spin attack. However, Indian spinners also conceded many run in the first game as Pakistani batsmen, specially Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Yousuf, exploited Indian spinners. Harbhajan conceded 71 runs in his 10 overs picking up only one wicket. Yusuf Pathan also suffered the same fate as he conceded 56 runs in his 10 overs with a wicket. Pacer Nehra picked up 4 wickets and brought a good start for India, but overall he did not look threatening. Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni also admitted that his bowlers conceded too many runs.

Rediff reported:

"Whatever field you gave them, it didn't work. You can give the field but can't really bowl for anyone. We bowled very short and gave away a lot of runs towards backward point region. Our bowlers had bowled on bouncy wickets (in the lead-up to the game) and suddenly had to bowl on a track where they needed to bowl up. They didn't adjust," Dhoni said.
"We gave away too many runs. The shots were going in the area when there was no field. It was really tough out there.

Now, it is pretty much clear that both India and Australia will look to avoid the mistakes they did in their opening game. There is no doubt, Indian spinners have to take front seat when it comes to their bowling attack and pacers would have to pick up couple of early wickets so that spinner can get the Aussie batsmen already under pressure. Nehra is doing well, but other two paces RP Singh and Ishant Sharma have to help Nehra with their performance. I do not think that India would bring any change in their bowling attack, even though you might say that RP could be replaced by Praveen Kumar. However, I do not think that it would be a viable option for India.

In the absence of Sehwag and Yuvraj, Indian batting line up has lost significant amount of strength. However, injuries are part of the game and you have got to accept it with positive attitude. I have no question about Indian batting line up, but I think, India need to bring a change in their batting order. After the opening pair, I think, India lacks the presence of someone who can rotate the strike rate and at the same keep the wicket at the one end. Yuvraj Singh has been playing the role for India with sheer amount of success over the years. Now, in his absence, I think, Suresh Raina should be deployed in this role and he should come at no. 3 or no. 4, but not after that. He has the natural ability of playing shots and can exploit the bad ball with ease.

Virat Kohli has the potential, but he is still under performed. So, I think, it would be better if he comes at no. 5 and Dhoni should come at no. 6. If India chase a big total like they did against Australia, then I think, they could play a gamble by sending Yusuf Pathan in the top order in order to exploit the fielding restriction. Anyway, overall I think, veteran Sachin Tendulkar and his opening partner Gautam Gambhir, who scored a well-played half century against Pakistan, would have to play crucial roles in the top order because a good start from the opening pair would set up a platform for the other batsmen.

For Australia, they have a very good batting line up. The only problem is that their batsmen have to click against India. Shane Watson may be a makeshift opener, but along with Tim Paine, Watson has been pretty much successful in this role. However, Australian openers need to show more consistency. Two experienced batsmen Hussey and Ponting are also in the top order and then comes talented Ferguson. In the middle order, Australia has the likes of hard hitter Cameron White, who has recently got his debut century in ODI recently, and all rounder James Hopes who is also capable of playing big shots. In the lower order, Australia has the service of bowling all rounder Mitchell Johnson who appeared as the savior of Australia against West Indies.

Overall, Australian batting order is pretty much threatening. Their pace attack incorporating Lee, Siddle, Johnson and Watson may have failed to perform expectedly, but specialist spinner Nathan Hauritz looked dominating against West Indies. If Centurion wicket provides any help to the pacers, then it is expected that Indian batsmen have to face strong challenge from Australian pace attack. However, a spinner friendly wicket may not be ideal for Australia because Indian batsmen are master of spin bowling and I do not think that Hauritz will be able to dominate over them. So, it is pretty much certain that India will be looking for a spinner friendly wicket. Still, they have to worry about the performance of their spinners who failed against Pakistan, even though their counterparts Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi successfully exploited the condition and created huge problems for the Indian batsmen.

To be honest, I think, India seems to be favorite considering a number of facts. First of all, Australia came to South Africa with the experience of playing in English condition which is always helpful for pacers. Against West Indies, they did not face any quality spin attack, but against India, Australian batsmen have to face a quality spin attack. Yes, I agree that Indian spin attack was under performed against Pakistan, but you can not expect that the same thing is going to happen when India is going to play in a crunch game like this. From this point of view, I think, India has little edge over Australia. Well, that does not mean that I am writing off Australia’s chances in the game. What I would like to say that India holds an advantage, but Australian team has the quality and talent to overcome that gap. Overall, I am expecting an exciting match between India and Australia.

Sri Lanka vs New Zealand Preview & Live Score: ICC Champions Trophy 2009

If you want to get live score of India vs Pakistan match then visit the link- India Australia Match Updates: 28 September 2009

In a do-or-die match of group B, Sri Lanka is going to face New Zealand tomorrow (27 September) in Champions Trophy 2009. The defeated side of the match will be eliminated from the tournament. Sri Lanka started of very well in the tournament defeating host South Africa in the opening game, but lost to England in the next game. So, the New Zealand game is the last match for Sri Lanka in the group stage. New Zealand, on the other hand, can not afford another defeat after losing the first game to South Africa. Naturally, it is a big match for both sides and I expect a highly competition affair at the New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.

Match: Sri Lanka vs New Zealand, Group B, ICC Champions Trophy 2009

Date: 27 September 2009

Venue: New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, South Africa

Kick off: 07:30 GMT (Local Time 09:30)

Sri Lanka has a very good squad in the presence of some hard hitting batsmen and two threatening spinners. After a good start, Sri Lanka lost the momentum against England and could not put on any competition in the game. In fact, Sri Lankan batsmen totally failed against England. Most importantly, they failed against an ordinary England bowling attack.

AFP reported:

"No defeat is good. We like to win every game. We've got to do a lot better and we can do a lot better. Everyone knows that. We have one day to review things and get back," Sangakkara said after his team's defeat.

"Every game is important in the Champions Trophy. We need to improve our fielding. If we beat New Zealand we are in the semi-finals, almost there," said the Sri Lankan captain.

"The key is to get the processes right and make sure that we cover all the areas. Everyone has got skills, but it's a matter of what you do with it on the match day."

New Zealand came to South Africa on the back of a frustrating tour in Sri Lanka, but they indicated a strong bounce back when they defeated India in the practice match with sheer ease. However, the same New Zealand appeared against South Africa in their first match of the tournament. In fact, their batsmen failed once again to live up to the expectation. Now, there is no doubt, New Zealand batsmen must improve on their current level of performance, if they are to survive in the tournament. Otherwise, New Zealand elimination from the group stage will be ensured tomorrow leaving a match in hand.

Well, it is also true that the nature of the wickets will also have a decisive role in the game. A spinner friendly wicket will see New Zealand playing an extra spinner in Jeetan Patel, but then they have to face the likes of Muralitharan and Mendis. So, it would be better for New Zealand if Johannesburg wicket offers help to the pacers. In that case, I would not be surprised if Sri Lanka plays one specialist spinner in order to make way for an extra pacer.

Oddspreview reported:

The nature of the pitch, rather than form issues, is likely to determine the make-up of these two teams. New Zealand made a tactical error in not picking Jeetan Patel for the dry wicket at Centurion but he is unlikely to play here. Room might be made for another seamer, either Ian Butler or James Franklin, although the Black Caps will be concerned not to weaken their already fragile batting.

Overall, it seems to be a final before the semi final! Sounds odd? Well, it is final in the sense that one team’s Champions trophy hopes will be finished with this match. So, in a sense, this is the match where both teams can hold on to their hopes. Now, let us see if both sides can present an entertaining match showing some exciting cricketing display.

Who are Progressing to Semi Final of ICC Champions Trophy 2009?

ICC Champions Trophy 2009 is now going on in South Africa with full swing. You know that top 8 test-playing countries are participating in the tournament. At this moment, the tournament is at the group stage. Two teams from each of the two groups will progress into the semi final of the Champions Trophy 2009 on the basis of points achieved through the group stage games. Now, the question is who are going to make it to the last four of the tournament.

Group A includes India, Pakistan, West Indies and Australia, while group B incorporates England, South Africa, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. You see all the teams have the quality to win the tournament, but as per the tournament format, four teams will be eliminated from the group stage and four will progress.

I think, South Africa and Sri Lanka will get into the semi final from Group B. Well, by saying this, I am not underrating the quality of New Zealand and England. The fact is that South Africa and Sri Lanka have the advantage to make it to the semi final. South Africa is the home side and they have a very strong line up in the presence of a number of quality all roudners. The Protease has won one of their 2 matches, and has the England match in hand. Considering the team strength, I think, South Africa is going to win over the English side, even though the English has got off to a good start in the tournament with a 6-wicket victory over Sri Lanka. A victory over England would almost ensure their semi final progress.

For Sri Lanka, they have a match left too and that is against the New Zealand. Considering New Zealand’s problem against Sri Lanka in their recent tour make me guess that Sri Lanka is going to win it. Moreover, Sri Lanka has a very good run rate and I think, a victory over the Kiwis will see them through to the semi final. Now, if England wins over the Kiwis, then either South Africa or England will go into the next stage on the basis of run rate. Overall, I mind says that South Africa and Sri Lanka are going to the semi final from this group.

Group A is more competitive with India, Pakistan and Australia all aspiring to get into the semi final. Australia is he defending world champion as well as the reigning title holder of Champions Trophy. Still, I believe that India and Pakistan are going to make it to the semi final from Group A. West Indies has no hope left after suffering two defeats. So, the competition is now within three teams. It is pretty much understandable that India will win over West Indies, if noting special happens.

Pakistan has a very good squad. India may have come with a depleted squad, but I believe they still have the quality to reach the last four. Australia may have had a tremendous series over England, but I do not believe that the Aussies faced the best of England.

So, my bet is on India and Pakistan from Group A and South Africa and Sri Lanka from Group B. What do you think about it?

Two arch rivals of cricket, India and Pakistan, are going to face each other on Saturday (26 September) in a crucial match of Champions Trophy 2009. This is the match millions of fans are waiting for and there are a number of things related to this game. Whenever India and Pakistan play against each other, it becomes a big occasion, but this time the significance of the game is even more. Even though both teams are missing some key players, you can still expect a nail-biting affair between India and Pakistan.

Match: India vs Pakistan, Group A, ICC Champions Trophy 2009

Date: 26 September 2009

Venue: SuperSport Park, Centurion, South Africa

Kick off: 12:30 GMT (Local Time 14:30)

Well, this is the first match between the two fierce rivals of the game in 2009. More importantly, this is the first match between them since the Mumbai Terror attack of November 2008. Since that blood-shed, diplomatic relationship between the two countries went down. Indian government did not allow its cricket team to go on a pre-scheduled cricket tour to Pakistan in January this year, before Pakistan government put a bar on its cricketers to take part in IPL 2009 in South Africa. Recently, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken an initiative to revive the bilateral relationship between two cricket boards. I think, this match will make their task easy because millions of cricket fans across the world are desperately waiting for this game.

Let’s now back to cricket again. The match is very important for both India and Pakistan. India will kick off its Champions Trophy journey with this game and they would like to start the mission with a victory. Pakistan, on the other hand, already played against West Indies and pulled off an easy 5-wicket victory yesterday (Wednesday). A victory against India would not only boost up Pakistan’s confidence level, but also almost ensure Pakistan’s progress to the semi final from Group A.

India team reached South Africa without two of their key players: Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan- both of whom are suffering from shoulder injury. Opener Gautam Gambhir missed the recently held Compaq Cup tri-nation series in Sri Lanka through a groin injury, but the batsman is all set to return for the Pakistan game. Meanwhile, India has suffered another big blow as Yuvraj Singh has now also been ruled out of the tournament after breaking his finger in practice. The left hander will now be replaced by Virat Kohli who has been called up to fly to South Africa. So, you can see Pakistan will face a depleted India on Saturday.

AFP reported:

"Yuvraj has fractured a finger in his right hand and has been ruled out for six weeks," the Board of Control for Cricket in India said in a press release Wednesday.

"The selectors have chosen Virat Kohli as replacement for Yuvraj. He will fly out as soon as formalities are completed."

Injury concern may not be so intense in the Pakistan camp, but still they are worried about the fitness of their captain Younis Khan who missed their tournament opener. He sustained a broken finger during a practice match last Friday. However, Younis Khan is expected to feature against India.

Pakistan captain Younis Khan also broke a finger on his right hand while going for a catch in the slips during a warmup game against West Indies last Friday. But Khan is hoping to be ready to play in his side's second game against India in Centurion on Saturday.

India’s has lost significant amount of their strength before kicking off their Champions trophy mission and it will be very tough to fill up the void left by the absentees. In the absence of Sehwag, India lacks the fear factor at the top order. Even more importantly, India will miss Yuvraj who is a big contributor when it comes to building an innings. His ability to exploit the spinners in the middle orvers can not be replaced by any other batsman at this moment. Experience Zaheer Khan was instrumental behind India’s good form over the last one year. Naturally, Indian pace department will lack experience in his absence.

However, India can still hold their head up as there are some excellent crickets around. First of all, India will get the service of always inspirational Sachin Tendulkar. If Gambhir passes the fitness test and joins him in the opening slot, India may not need to worry a lot about the absence of Sehwag. In the middle order, India has experienced Rahul Dravid, talented Suresh Raina, captain Dhoni and all rounder Yusuf Pathan. Virat Kohli will also be there in place of Yuvraj Singh, but I think, it will be Suresh Raina who has to take additional responsibility in the absence of Yuvraj.

When it comes to bowling, India has a very good spin attack led by off spinner Harbhajan Singh. India can also seek the service of leg spinner Amit Mishra, but I do not think that India will play two spinners in South African condition. However, Yusuf Pathan’s off spin will also be handy for India. However, their pace attack is not anything special to look at. Yes, there are some talented bowlers like Praveen Kumar and RP Singh, but they do not pose any threat for the opposition bowlers. Ishant Sharma has not yet fully transform his test form into ODI format. Ashish Nehra is very experienced and earned his place in the Indian team with strong domestic performance, but it does not seem that he would be a very big threat for the opponents. However, the thing is that Indian pacers have to perform collectively well if India wants to get off to a good start in the tournament because pacers are supposed to dominate in South African wickets.

Let us now focus on Pakistan squad. Pakistan pacers showed very strong performance against West Indies. You might diminish their success considering the second string West Indies squad, but overall, I believe Pakistani pacers look very strong at this moment and how well Indian batsmen face Pakistani pacers may be decisive in the match. They have an excellent pace attack in the presence of Umar Gul, Mohammad Aamer and Naved-ul-Hasan. I do not think that Pakistan will feature Mohammad Asif against India because it will be too big a pressure for the bowler to handle as he has returned to the Pakistan team after a year of doping ban. Quality pacer Iftikhar Anjum is also there in the squad.

Spin attack is also very strong in the presence of Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi. Shoaib Malik’s off spin could also be very effective. If there is anything Pakistan needs to worry about, then it is their consistent batting performance. Chasing below-150 total, Pakistani batsmen suffered a lot against West Indies losing some early wickets. It is not that their batting line up lacks strength and depth. They have a good opening pair in Imran Nazir and Kamran Akmal. Then in the middle order, Pakistan has the likes of Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Yousuf, Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi and Naved-ul-Hasan.

India may have won the Compaq Cup title, but team India suffered a big-margin defeat at the hands of New Zealand in the practice match. However, Rahul Dravid does not think that his team has to worry about that defeat.

Telegraphindia reported:

“We shouldn’t read too much into it. When the main tournament begins, we would be alright,” Dravid said after the match.

“The conditions in Johannesburg and Centurion would be different. This was a dry surface and it turned straightaway. Spinners bowled 30 overs (of the 50) and that doesn’t happen often in these conditions,” he said.

Indian and Pakistani players always forget the word ‘defeat’ whenever they face each other on the field. It is a match both sides just want to win it. Considering the fierce rivalry sustained between the two teams, I think, cricket fans are going to experience a highly competitive game. I do not like to pick up any side as favorite, but I guess the result of the match will vastly rely on the performance of Indian pacers and Pakistani batsmen. Now, let us see if India and Pakistan can live up to the expectations of the fans.
