Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has said that spinners will be vital in the upcoming twenty20 world cup 2009 that begins on 5 June. Dhoni led his side to win the inaugural t20 world cup two years back in South Africa and now has come to defend the title with a squad that has players who have played 80 to 90 percent ODI matches over the last few years. Dhoni thinks that English wickets will be flat and spinners will have an important role to play in the tournament.
Well, I do not think that English wickets will totally help the spinners. Traditionally, English wickets help the slow swing bowlers like former New Zealand player Chris Harris who did not have huge pace, but had good amount of swing. No doubt, spinners will find some assistance in turning the ball, but I do think that spinners are going to dominate the tournament. Dhoni might rely on his key spinners like Harbhajan Singh and Ojha as well as some other occasional but effective spinners like Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Ravindra Jadeja.
