Kannur University was established in 1996 by the Act 22 of Kerala Legislative Assembly. The university was inaugurated on March 2, 1996 by the hon. Chief Minister of Kerala. The main campus of the university is located in Mangattuparamba in the Kannur district. The main objective of the university is to provide better higher education in Kasaragod, Kannur, and Wayanad Districts of Kerala State, India. Professor Dr. M. Abdul Rahiman was the first VC of the University from January 1996 to December 1999. The university is of affiliating type and offers a wide range of courses. The IT Education Center located in Kasaragod provides postgraduate courses in computer science. The center has sophisticated computer laboratories. Kannur University offers graduate and post graduate courses. Some of its major departments are: School of English & Foreign Languages, Department of Studies in English School of Social Sciences, Department of Anthropology School of Life Sciences, Department of Biotechnology & Microbiology School of Management Studies, Department of Management Studies, and School of Information Science & Technology.
